THE Gloucester Scorpions Under 14s stood their ground last Saturday, sending a clear message to the competition that they are once again serious contenders this season.
An absolute thriller unfolded at Gloucester Soccer Complex as the Scorpions took on ladder leaders Pacific Palms Panthers Football Club.
After suffering a 7-1 defeat to the Panthers in their first meeting of the season, Gloucester entered the match determined to produce a much stronger performance. Adopting a slightly more defensive shape to counter Pacific Palms’ dominant midfield, the Scorpions came out of the blocks with far greater intensity, showing plenty of hunger for the ball and a determination to shut down the Panthers’ attacking threats.
The match was played at a relentless pace, with both midfields engaged in a fierce battle for possession. Gloucester repeatedly pressed forward and were rewarded when Eli Soupidis made an exceptional run and finished brilliantly to give the Scorpions a 1-0 lead.
Despite having no substitutes available, Pacific Palms refused to back down. Their response was immediate as they increased the pressure and spent long periods attacking deep inside Gloucester’s defensive third. The pressure eventually paid off when a shot slipped under goalkeeper Ewan Sheely before being tapped home by a Panthers player to level the scores at 1-1.
The second half was a genuine pressure cooker, with both teams creating chances and pushing hard for the winning goal. River Cowley was outstanding in his defensive midfield role, producing several crucial interventions to keep the Panthers out of Gloucester’s final third. Up front, Peter Clinch worked tirelessly, supported by the strong midfield efforts of Henry Maggs and Eli Soupidis.
As the clock wound down, Gloucester looked the more likely side to find a winner. Several chances fell their way, including one effort that struck the post and another that flashed just wide of the target.
When the final whistle sounded, the scores remained locked at 1-1. While Gloucester may have been unlucky not to take all three points, the result was an important test for the team and further evidence of how far they have progressed since the start of the season.
The Scorpions will be back in action this Saturday at Gloucester Soccer Complex when they take on Great Lakes Vikings, with kick-off scheduled for 9:00am.
The team would also like to thank all supporters who came along to cheer them on.
