Gloucester Public School wins back-to-back NSW PSSA hockey titles

GLOUCESTER Public School has made history once again by securing back-to-back State titles in the NSW PSSA Hockey Knockout competition.

On Wednesday, 23 September, the team travelled to the Newcastle International Hockey Centre to compete in the State PSSA Final series.

Our first challenge was against Bowral Public School in the semi-final. Winning the toss, Gloucester started confidently, quickly forcing a short corner within the first minute.

Despite narrowly missing an early shot, the team maintained relentless pressure with swift passing, strong tackles, and strategic play.

Bowral opened the scoring, but Gloucester responded strongly.

After defending several short corners, Fletcher scored from one to level the game.

Just before halftime, Dallas’s goal edged Gloucester ahead 2-1.

In the second half, despite intense attacks from Bowral, Gloucester’s goalkeeper Sebastian produced an incredible heel save, preserving the lead.

Gloucester’s determined defence held firm until the final whistle, earning them a well-deserved victory and a place in the State Final.

Last year’s championship win ended a 31-year drought for Gloucester Public School, making their return to the finals this year a remarkable feat, especially for a country town school competing against better-resourced opponents.

Their achievement speaks volumes about the dedication and teamwork displayed by the players.

We are proud to have several talented players who have represented their regions this year, being selected for the Manning and/or Hunter PSSA teams competing in the State Championships in May, as well as for the NSW PSSA team heading to Nationals next month.

Additionally, some have represented the Manning Valley in the Under-14 Boys State Championships.

It has been rewarding to watch these boys grow, achieve their goals, and it’s exciting to anticipate what they will accomplish next.

In the final, Gloucester faced a formidable Tamworth Public School, who had cruised through their semi-final.

After winning the toss and changing their formation, Gloucester took early control, generating multiple chances.

Tamworth scored first with a break-away goal midway through the first half, but Gloucester’s resilience shone through.

A halftime tactical change, inspired by captain Fletcher’s observation of space on the left, energised the team.

The second half saw relentless back-and-forth action.

Archie’s fierce determination paid off when he chased down a wide pass into the circle, controlled the ball just inside the backline, and struck a shot that bobbled over the line to equalise, causing the crowd to erupt.

Gloucester earned several short corners in the final minutes, but Tamworth’s defence held firm.

When the final whistle blew, both coaches anticipated extra time, but the Convener and umpires announced Gloucester and Tamworth were Joint State Champions for 2026.

An achievement not achieved for Gloucester Public School since 1982.

Congratulations to Gloucester Public School’s hockey team.
