Forster food safety seminar could help businesses avoid costly breaches

THROUGHOUT Australia, there are heavy penalties for breaches of food safety laws.

In NSW, penalties can include fines, prosecution, or the suspension of a food business’s licence.

Operators found guilty of serious breaches could face fines of up to $1.1m, while individuals can be fined up to $220,000.

The NSW Food Authority conducts regular inspections and audits, and businesses can receive an improvement notice requiring them to rectify issues within a specified timeframe.

Offending businesses can also be closed, with those fined or prosecuted listed on a public ‘name and shame’ register on the authority’s website.

On the Mid North Coast, hundreds of businesses are involved in the handling and sale of food.

To help local operators avoid the unpleasantness, embarrassment or the financial cost of breaching food safety laws, MidCoast Council is conducting a free Food Safety Seminar in Forster this month.

The council’s announcement promises ‘a fun and informative event where you’ll learn all about food safety regulations and best practices’.

“Our interesting speakers will cover topics like proper food handling, storage, and hygiene,” the statement said.

“Whether you’re a food business owner or just passionate about food safety, this seminar is perfect for you.”

The seminar is on Tuesday, 24 November at the Forster Civic Centre.

Registration is via Eventbrite.
