Gloucester U3A members tackle cybersafety

WITH scams, phishing and identity theft all concerns in the modern online world, Gloucester University of the Third Age (U3A) members recently honed their cybersafety skills and understanding.

Under the expert guidance of Barrington IT professional Shaedon Flanagan, they were alerted to a range of practical tips on how to protect themselves online.

Shaedon said he is often called in to assist local residents who have been scammed.

“These are the sorts of issues that affect everyone, however seniors are particularly at risk as they are often deliberately and cleverly targeted by cyber criminals,” he said.

Safety issues relating to mobile phones, calls, emails and web browsing were all covered in the talk.

U3A members were left a little “shellshocked” by the ways in which cyber fraudsters operate. “I never realised how much I was at risk every time I pick up my phone or turn on my computer,” commented one participant.

“I have learnt so much today,” another said.

“I am going home to put this into practice right away.”

U3A is a community organisation serving the needs and interests of retired and semi-retired people.

As well as numerous weekly classes on a variety of topics, U3A conducts monthly talks such as the recent cybersafety session.

The next talk is scheduled for 22 October on “Wills and Estate Planning”.
