BETTY Pearson has been nominated as a Gloucester Sports Committee Local Legend in recognition of an extraordinary 60 years of unwavering dedication and service to the Gloucester & District Netball Club.
“Betty’s journey began as a player aged 16, from where her passion for the game and commitment to her teammates quickly became evident,” said Lorraine Forbes, Secretary/Treasurer, Gloucester Sports Committee.
“Her time on the court was marked not only by skill and determination, but by a genuine love of netball that inspired those around her.”
Following her playing career, Betty continued to give back to the sport in countless ways.
Through her contribution as a selector, her insight and knowledge helped shape teams and nurture emerging talent.
As a coach, Betty played a pivotal role in developing players of all ages and abilities, sharing her knowledge, encouraging confidence and fostering a strong sense of teamwork and sportsmanship.
Many athletes have benefitted from her guidance, not only improving their skills but also growing in character under her mentorship.
In leadership roles such as Treasurer, Vice President and Umpire Convenor, Betty’s impact has been profound.
“She has been a guiding force within the club – mentoring umpires, supporting players and helping build a strong, inclusive and thriving netball community,” Lorraine said.
“Her tireless efforts behind the scenes have ensured the smooth running and continued growth of the club for decades.”
In recognition of her outstanding service, Betty was awarded Life Membership to the Gloucester & District Netball Association on 18 December 1996 – an honour that reflects the high regard in which she is held and the lasting impact of her contributions to the sport.
Betty has continued to umpire for the club, officiating at local and regional levels.
She demonstrates fairness, integrity and an exceptional understanding of the game, earning the respect of players and officials alike.
“For six decades Betty has embodied the very values of the club.
“It is difficult to imagine our Netball community without her influence and dedication.
“This Local Legend nomination is a fitting tribute to a remarkable individual whose contributions have been nothing short of exceptional.”
