Colin Weismantel to be recognised as Local Legend

The late Colin Weismantel.

THE late Colin Weismantel will be recognised as a Local Legend at the annual Gloucester Sports Awards presentation to be held on Saturday, 9  May at Gloucester Bowling Club.

Colin joined the Gloucester Croquet Club in 2010 at the tender age of 83.

With determination and enthusiasm he quickly mastered the game, becoming a very competent player.

Gloucester, Forster, Taree and Port Macquarie make up what is known as the Mid North Coast Croquet Council (MNCCC).

Col’s game was such that he was an immediate choice as part of the team to represent Gloucester in MNCCC tournaments.

Col’s game score, whether he was playing singles or doubles, was always a boost to the overall performance of the Gloucester team.

In 2012, Col represented Gloucester in a MNCCC singles competition.

With his accuracy and skill, Col shone through, winning all three of his singles matches.

Col’s sound win was pivotal in putting the Gloucester team in front to take out the Division 3 trophy for the Mid North Coast Championship.

This was a particularly gratifying feat for the Gloucester club which has a membership of 35, compared to both Forster and Port Macquarie who each have over 100 members.

Col was also keen to travel to other clubs around the district and the Hunter region.

He participated in a number of inter-club days and one-day carnivals against Toronto, Nelson Bay, Forster and Taree.

Col was not only a valuable singles, doubles and team player, but was also a great mentor and had an excellent ability to encourage new players.

He exhibited a keenness to play at his best, but at the same time led by example with great sportsmanship.

He was an excellent club person, regularly assisting with any work on the club’s lawns, including line marking and setting of the hoops for club games and competitions.

He was not left behind when it came to the catering either, always turning up with some of his wife’s cooking.

Colin was an inspiration to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Sadly, he passed away last year and is badly missed by his club mates.
