Cedric Salter’s 80-plus years of country music

Cedric Salter celebrates his induction into the Australian Country Music Stars of Fame with Gloucester & District Country Music Club President Gail Ellis.

CEDRIC Salter, 88, has been hooked on country music since the age of five, when his dad would play it on the radio and his mum would sing along.

After decades working to grow the genre’s popularity in regional NSW, “Ced” was inducted to the Australian Country Music Stars of Fame in December 2025.

Started in 1993 by long-term entertainer Phil Mahoney, the Music Stars of Fame platform pays tribute to Australian country music performers, and promoters who have supported the development of other artists.

Ced has judged talent quests in Kempsey, Port Macquarie-Hastings, Gloucester, Morpeth, Dungog and other regions and enjoyed an extended stint on local community radio, hosting a show called “Lil’ Bit Country” for more than five years.

He is also a Life Member of the Gloucester & District Country Music Club, formed in 1981.

Ced joined the club in 1983 and soon became its publicity officer.

He was appointed Vice President in 1984 and became Club President in 1992, a position which he held for over 20 years.

When Gail Ellis took over as President in 2024, he gave her his full backing.

“I’ve never been a performer but an organiser, working with a very good committee,” he said.

“They were always ready to lend a hand so we should continue this way.”

The Club meets the first Sunday of the month at Club Gloucester.

Entry fee is $5 and raffles, food and home made jams are sold to raise funds for the community.

“Over the years, the Club has raised money for school kids to join school excursions and interstate sports events, the Westpac Helicopter Rescue Service, Girl Guides, cancer support and families in need,” Club president Gail said.
