THE Gloucester Cockies Rugby Union Club has announced that both their men’s and women’s teams will return to the field in 2026.

“2025 was a year of team rebuilding for the club,” said Club President Jamie Searle.

“We are thrilled to have two teams competing again, especially as we celebrate the Club’s 50th anniversary.”

The highly successful Cauliflower Club charity events in 2025 sparked renewed local interest in rugby union and led to the appointment of a new coach for the men’s team.

Henry Davis, a recent arrival in Gloucester, has played rugby since the age of nine.

Coaching the men’s team marks Henry’s first experience as a coach.

The women’s team will again be led by coach Chris Marchant, bringing consistency and experience to the squad.

The Cockies began training in January and played their first trial game on Saturday, 18 April against the Old Bar Clams.

Both teams emerged victorious in the trial, with the women’s team achieving a commanding 75-5 win and the men’s team securing a strong 27-7 result.

“The men’s team showed real ticker and heart in the way they played,” Davis told News Of The Area.

“That is something that can’t be taught and is really promising to see.”

The captain of the women’s side, Hannah Yates said, “Last weekend’s trial game against the Old Bar Clams was more than just a hit-out – it marked a proud moment for our club as we step back onto the field after a year of rebuilding.

“We’re building something special, and we’re excited for the season ahead.

“We’re looking forward to the first round of the 2026 season, against the Manning River Ratz.”

The Cockies would like to acknowledge the support of their 2026 sponsors who are an integral element to the operation of the club.

The club is organising a series of events to celebrate their anniversary year, starting with Ladies Day at the first home game on Saturday, 9 May.

“The club has a long history, and we want this year to be a celebration not only of the club, but the great game of rugby,” said Vice President and Treasurer Peter Chidiac.
