THE Gloucester Under 14 Scorpions’ impressive eight-game unbeaten run came to an end last Saturday, going down 1-0 to the Wingham Warriors in a thrilling contest at Gloucester.
The catch-up fixture kicked off at 9am in wet conditions, with steady rain making for a fast-paced and entertaining match. Gloucester created several opportunities during the opening half but found it difficult to break down Wingham’s tall, well-organised defensive line. Most of the Scorpions’ efforts came from long range or bounced comfortably through to the goalkeeper, who handled them with ease.
Both teams pressed strongly and defended with determination, resulting in a scoreless first half. Aiden Peters continued his excellent form in the defensive midfield role, while Gloucester’s dangerous wingers, Eli Soupidis and River Cowley, were repeatedly contained by a disciplined Wingham defence. The Scorpions also struggled to maintain possession through the middle of the park against the Warriors’ relentless pressure.
Wingham began the second half full of confidence, forcing Gloucester deep into defence for long periods. Midway through the half, the Scorpions enjoyed their best spell of the game. Eli Soupidis came agonisingly close, sending his shot just wide of the post, before Henry Maggs also went close only moments later.
The Warriors continued to threaten at the other end, with goalkeeper Ewan Sheely producing another outstanding save, diving at full stretch to tip a powerful shot over the crossbar. As the match looked destined to finish scoreless, Wingham finally found the breakthrough, making a determined run from a tight angle before firing home the decisive goal.
With five minutes remaining, Gloucester threw everything forward in search of an equaliser but were unable to create one last clear opportunity.
Congratulations to the Wingham Warriors on a hard-fought victory. The two sides will meet again in just three weeks for what promises to be another exciting encounter.
