Arts Gloucester’s annual photographic competition winners announced

WINNERS of Arts Gloucester’s annual photographic competition, Pix From The Stix, were announced on Saturday 15 August at the Gloucester Gallery.

Wildlife photographer and educator Rich Shaw, based in Port Macquarie, was this year’s judge.

Having had success in photography competitions, Rich understands what makes an image stand out to judges, and why those images leave an impression.

“It’s inspiring being a judge,” said Rich.

“You get the chance to see how other photographers explore different ideas, and to appreciate their approach.

“Photography is a passion for me, and I like to see others do well.”

Local Gloucester resident Gary Lyford started the competition 27 years ago.

It continues to attract local and out-of-town photographers, with local businesses providing the prize money that  assists in sustaining the competition.

”Pix From The Stix would not be possible without the generous support of local businesses, many who have supported the competition since its inception,” said Arts Gloucester President Graeme Healy.

Alan Waldon, a first-time entrant, received second place in the Natural Environment section.

“I am a new member of the Gloucester Camera Club, and I wanted to see how my photographs stacked up against more experienced photographers,” he said.

Junior section winner Silas Keighran submitted a photograph that Rich Shaw said he wished he had taken.

Silas told News Of The Area: “I like that when you take a photograph you can get a moment and remember it forever. “I don’t take photos all the time, but when I see an opportunity, I take it.”

Rachel Saunders, a regular entrant in the competition, won the Absence of Colour section this year and placed second in the Faces I Have Met section.

She said that the annual competition gave photographers a platform to show their work beyond social media, and to reach a wider audience.

“There are not many chances to have your work hanging in a gallery,” said Rachel.

MidCoast Mayor Claire Pontin presented the Major Prize to Sarah-Jane Eggins for her photograph Portrait in Nature.

Rich Shaw described Portrait in Nature as a beautiful image in which the pose and eye contact allow for connection between the subject and the viewer.

The Pix From The Stix exhibition will be on display at Gloucester Gallery until 30 August 2026.
