ANZAC Day weekend saw Gloucester Tennis Club hosting its annual Gloucester Seniors Tournament, with 72 players from other parts of NSW joining 14 local players for the competition.
Seniors tennis is for players over the age of 30, and this event, although organised by the Gloucester Tennis Club, was part of a number of statewide events held under the auspices of Tennis Seniors NSW.
“Our main objective is to promote tennis participation in New South Wales for players over 30 years of age,” explains Tennis Seniors NSW.
This year’s tournament attracted players of varying talents and ages, with the oldest being 82.
One player, Lyn Hanna, 80, will soon be heading off to the World Championships.
The matches are held as “round robins” and, depending on the result of each match, players receive points and a ranking from Tennis Seniors NSW.
Competition on the Friday and the Sunday was interrupted by the rain, but a full day’s play was possible on the Saturday.
“Despite the rain, it was a very successful event, with good numbers of participants,” said the Club’s tournament secretary Ruth Johnson.
“We’ve had positive feedback about our club, and how friendly and welcoming everyone was, and what a beautiful area we live in.
“The event would not have been possible without the sponsorship of many local businesses.
“We are looking forward to next year’s competition being even bigger and better.”
