Water lifeline: Booral family steps up in Stroud blaze

NUMEROUS firefighting crews, including Gloucester Fire and Rescue, were called to help contain a fire which recently broke out in bushland near Stroud golf course.

Gloucester Fire and Rescue were joined by several Rural Fire Service (RFS) units as well as water bombing helicopters who together managed to contain the fire and prevent significant property damage.

One issue which often faces firefighters is finding somewhere to refill their tankers with water, but on this occasion they were helped enormously by a good Samaritan by the name of Wayne Grey from Booral.

Wayne, who is Booral born and bred, runs Grey’s Earthmoving which as part of its business for the last 10 years has carted water in its two 10,000 litre tankers.

Wayne, who was joined by his brother Trevor and son Nathan, had no hesitation in offering his services to help the many other volunteers on the fire ground.

“I thought by supplying the water we could help keep them working longer so they didn’t have to keep running back and forth to find water,” said Wayne.

“If you were in the same position, wouldn’t you?

“There were many others working there, and they all did an impressive job to fight the fire.”

Wayne was unconcerned about bearing the cost of obtaining the water supplied to firefighters.
