GLOUCESTER’S Australia Day Committee has selected Murray Bowden as the 2026 Ambassador.
This honour is bestowed on local individuals who provide inspiration and promote the celebration of the spirit of Australia Day across various communities.
Ambassadors are typically high achieving individuals from diverse backgrounds Including sports people, business leaders, scientists and community workers.
By sharing the uplifting stories of their personal journeys and achievements they foster meaningful discussion about what it means to be Australian.
The committee believed Murray fitted the bill well.
Although Murray Bowden was born in Walcha, NSW, in 1971, his family moved to Gloucester in 1973.
He is the second youngest of five children born to Frank and Madge Bowden, and Gloucester has been home ever since.
Growing up in Gloucester, Murray enjoyed an active childhood, playing a wide range of sports including soccer, basketball, tennis and rugby league.
He excelled in golf and cricket.
Like many local kids, he experienced a childhood of freedom, spending countless hours fishing the surrounding rivers with his brother and mates.
These adventures fostered a deep appreciation for the local landscape and nurtured a love and respect for the district that remains strong to this day.
Although Murray now lives in Newcastle, he regularly makes the drive up the Bucketts Way to return home.
“Gloucester is my home, and always will be,” Murray says.
“This little town made me the man I am today.
“My friends and family are here, and I have nothing but cherished memories.”
Murray is a proud father to his 13-year-old daughter, Phoebe, and remains closely connected to his large extended family.
Reflecting on his role as Australia Day Ambassador, Murray said, “To be invited by the Australia Day Committee to represent Gloucester and speak about what being Australian means to me is a wonderful opportunity to share what it’s like growing up as a small-town country boy, and the opportunities this town and country have given me from childhood to now.
“I relish the opportunity to be with my local people and share my experiences with them on Australia Day.”
