Arts Gloucester offers creativity to young and old

BUDDING and experienced photographers and performers of all ages can showcase or develop their talents through three creative programs run by Arts Gloucester in July and August.

PIX from the STIX, Arts Gloucester’s annual photography competition, is currently open for submissions.

The competition, which celebrates the art of photography, has been running for 26 years and welcomes submissions from locals and those outside the Gloucester area.

The different entry categories, such as Portraiture, Nature, and Culture, enable photographers of all styles to be in the running for the prizes.

The Junior section for photographers 17 years and under has been growing over the past few years.

“This Junior section is not bound by a specific category to give the young photographers freedom to try different styles and subject matter,” PIX from the STIX coordinator, Charlie Lethbridge, told News Of The Area.

This year’s judge is Rick Shaw, a wildlife photographer and educator based in Port Macquarie.

Having been successful in photographic competitions, he has a practical understanding of what makes an image stand out to judges.

“Light, composition and intent are important elements of photographs,” Mr Shaw said.

Entries for PIX from the STIX close on July 26.

For aspiring, seasoned, and those curious about acting, both young and old, Arts Gloucester is also running two programs that may be of interest.

During school terms, drama workshops for primary students from years 3 – 6 are run every Wednesday afternoon, 3.15 pm – 4.45 pm at the Tennis Clubhouse.

Last Wednesday, the Term Two workshop concluded with a devised performance for parents and friends.

“It was so fun to watch the students use their imagination and drama skills to create their own performance,” said Anna-Rose Seale and Joe Hogan, the facilitators of the workshops.

Meanwhile, after running a series of successful acting classes for adults earlier this year, Arts Gloucester has decided to continue this initiative, with the next session open to all experience levels and beginning at 5:30 pm on Thursday, July 16, at the Senior Citizen Centre.

“The classes are a great way to meet people and to have a go at acting in a safe environment,” said John Galagher.
