Gloucester Public School students shine in literacy and numeracy

THE Gloucester Public School community was justifiably delighted with this year’s “Check-in” literacy and numeracy results.

The Check-in assessment is an annual online assessment for students in Years 3 to 9 in NSW Public Schools, with all students completing a reading test, and year 6 students also undertaking a writing task.

The students also undertake numeracy testing.

According to the Department of Education, the Check-in assessments support the identification of students’ performance in literacy and numeracy and inform next steps in teaching and learning.

The School’s Facebook page described this year’s results as “nothing short of fantastic”.

For years 3 to 6, the Gloucester Public School results in literacy were above the NSW state average, and well above the scores for other comparable schools.

For year 6 the school received a score of 59.1 per cent whereas the state average was 55.6 per cent and the comparable schools’ result was 50.5 per cent.

The numeracy results were even stronger, with both years 5 and 6 scoring above both the state average and the comparable schools’ average.

Year 5 results for numeracy were an impressive 16.1 per cent above the comparable school’s average and 8.4 per cent higher than the state average.

The numeracy results for years 3 and 4 are not yet available.

“The work that we are doing at the school, and the vision that we have for improving our results, is really paying off,” said Relieving School Principal Rod Maggs.

“The results are a testament to a lot of hard work that’s been happening in the school for a while.

“It’s really a partnership between the staff and the Department, but also with the kids really putting in the work.

“I would describe these results as outstanding.”

In late 2024 the school received a School Excellence Award because of its outstanding NAPLAN results.
