GLOUCESTER State Emergency Service (SES) members were honoured at an awards ceremony at Taree on 10 March, some for bravery and other for years of dedicated service.
Among the award recipients were Rob McNeice and Robert Seale, who received the Commissioner’s Commendation for Courage for the rescue of a person from fast flowing floodwaters.
On 7 July 2022 a vehicle, which had attempted to drive though floodwater at Faulkland, was swept off the road into deeper water, trapping the occupant.
“At approximately 10.30pm Gloucester SES volunteers responded to a swift water rescue on a flooded causeway,” said Assistant Commissioner Sean Kearns, when presenting the courage awards.
“A 65-year-old man had driven his vehicle into floodwater and was swept off the crossing, becoming stranded on the top of his vehicle in a very fast-moving Gloucester River,” Kearns said.
“In extremely dangerous nighttime conditions, including strong currents, cold water, debris and limited visibility, these two entered the floodwater, while other members secured the riverbank.
“They successfully reached the stranded driver and were able to bring him safely back to shore.”
John Johnson and Mark Campbell were also honoured for 45 years of volunteer service to the SES, and the Gloucester Unit itself received an award for its exceptional role in relation to the flooding.
“John Johnston and Mark Campbell both deserved recognition for their 45 years of exceptional professionalism, dedication and commitment in service to the Gloucester community,” said Mr McNeice, who serves as the Gloucester SES Unit Commander.
“I am so proud of our Unit for being given an award recognising the work it put in during floods.”
Mr McNeice said the Gloucester SES unit is always seeking the support of new members from the next generation to carry on serving the community in its times of need.
“If you can see yourself in orange, come and learn some exciting new skills to help others,” he added.
Members train every Tuesday night at 23 Tate street, Gloucester commencing at 7pm.
Visitors or new members are most welcome.
