THERE was action aplenty at the tennis courts last Tuesday night as the Gloucester Tennis Club hosted its annual Town vs Country night.
The event, first started in the 1960s, is a feature of the tennis calendar and, as its name suggests, pits Gloucester townsfolk against their country cousins in mixed, mens and ladies divisions.
The countryfolk, aided by their fresh air and clean living, have had the edge over the townies in recent years, and so it continued this year, with Country coming out on top 167 games to 123.
Townies, while disappointed in needing to once again provide the supper for next year’s competition, can take comfort in knowing that they are closing the gap between their country counterparts.
Needless to say, they will also no doubt continue their long-running campaign to extend the town boundaries, similar to Queensland in the State of Origin.
For now though, Country retains the bragging rights, the Townies are in the kitchen for another year, and of course tennis was the winner.
