Lunching with mates

EVELYN Rumble watched her mother serve in the Salvation Army kitchens and made the decision that she would serve others too.

She was seven years old when her mum died but already she was determined to learn to cook, bring people together and see them enjoy eating.

“The kitchen is my favourite place where I can create meals and experiment with flavours,” said Evelyn, who worked as a cooking convenor in her younger days, said.

In April 2013, the Gloucester District Baptist Church seniors’ group started SALT (Seniors At Lunch Together) and Evelyn made a beeline to be part of the cooking team.

Evelyn, 86, stepped down from her role recently but said she had enjoyed every minute of it.

“SALT, which is held the first Monday of each month (except for long weekends when it is held on the second Monday) has served 135 lunches since the start,” Pam Wenham recounted.

Pam is in charge of the menu and cooking.  She added, “Meals at $10 consist of a hot first course and a choice of sweets, with tea and coffee.”

The program begins with hearty old time singing led by Norm Harwood on the guitar, followed by lunch. There’s a short message and sometimes an amusing yarn by Geoff Harris or some jokes or riddles.

“We are thankful that lunches are well attended and funds raised through SALT can be donated to a charity monthly,” said MC Gordon Hayward.
