A YOUNG child’s first haircut is usually quite a significant, sometimes traumatic occasion.
And not just for the child, but the parents too.
However, almost four-year-old Tommy Mowbray’s first haircut on 25 September had a much wider impact because, when the time came for his first haircut, his parents, Alissa and Liam, decided to chat to him about donating his hair to make a bespoke wig for a child with cancer.
“I think it would make them so happy,” was Tommy’s comment when they raised the idea.
But not only are his beautiful golden locks being donated, the family has taken the opportunity to use the occasion as a fundraiser for the Kids with Cancer Foundation.
“This fundraiser will help support the creation of bespoke wigs for children, provide essential financial assistance to families in need, and generate funds for paediatric oncology hospitals across the country, ensuring that every child facing cancer receives the care and support they deserve,” said Alissa.
Alissa’s cousin had childhood cancer. It was a strong motivating factor behind the idea of donating Tommy’s hair and raising funds.
“Hair loss during cancer treatment can be one of the hardest parts for children,” explains the Kids with Cancer Foundation website.
“It often starts just a week after treatment begins and can be a visible reminder of everything they’re going through.
“For many kids, losing their hair can feel like losing a part of who they are.
“That’s why we created Wigs4Kids™ — to help children feel more comfortable, confident, and like themselves again.”
Each wig costs over $3000 to make.
Alissa was initially hoping that Tommy’s haircut might raise about $300, but at last count they had raised over $1500 and they are hoping for more.
And the haircut went well.
“The mailman is going to take it to the sick kids,” Tommy said.
“They will stick it on, and it will make them happy.”
