Gloucester CWA Evening Branch distributes funds to worthy recipients

THE August meeting of the Gloucester CWA Evening Branch was well attended with a few apologies from some members sick or on holidays.

For the Branch’s August Cultural outing, Cultural Officer Di Mansfield arranged an outing to the Gloucester Museum for a screening of the movie “Rangle River”, which was enjoyed by all.

The movie, made in 1936, starred Victor Jory and was based on a Zane Grey story which he wrote while on a fishing trip in Australia in 1935.

Part of the movie was filmed in Rawdon Valley and locations around Gloucester, which many in the audience readily recognised.

In July, International Officers Jo and Shayne and their helpers cooked a delicious Fijian luncheon for the combined Branches International Day.

“We have been busy the past 12 months raising much-needed funds, so we were able to make donations to several worthy organisations,” Barbara Reichert told News Of The Area.

“Recipients included CWA of NSW Disaster Funds, CWA of NSW Medical Research Fund for ovarian cancer, Bush Doctors Bursary funds, Breast Cancer Trials by Dr Nic Zdenkowski at Maitland, Gloucester Westpac helicopter, CWA of NSW Association, Gloucester gymnastics club, Gloucester combined schools concert bands, Gloucester Hockey Club and the five schools in our area for their end-of-year presentations.

“Funds were raised through our catering activities and various raffles.

“We start again with our fundraising on Saturday 12 September when we will again be catering for the Carb Dinner prior to the Tri Challenge Competition to be held Sunday 13 September.

“Competitors need plenty of carbohydrates to compete in the gruelling competition.”

The Branch is holding a Scone Street Stall on Saturday 19 September at McGrath’s corner.

Commencing at 9am a variety of scones will be on offer including plain scones, scones with jam and cream, pumpkin scones and date scones.

“Be early so you don’t miss out,” Barbara said.

Both branches of the Gloucester CWA have organised a Garden Party to be held at Gloucester CWA President Anne Williamson’s garden,13 Barrington East Road, Barrington, on Saturday 5 September commencing at 1.30pm.

Plants, local produce and gardening books will also be on sale.

There will be a hat competition with four categories including the Prettiest Hat, the Most Interesting Gardening Hat, a Man’s Hat and a Vintage Style Hat.

All are most welcome to attend.

The entry fee of $15 (cash only) includes afternoon tea.

Funds raised will go towards improvements to the CWA hall.

Barbara congratulated cooks who submitted entries in the Branch level Land Cookery Competition.

The next meeting of Gloucester CWA Evening Branch will be held at the CWA hall in Church Street (opposite Woolworths) on Thursday 10 September commencing at 7pm.

New members are most welcome.
